Man Shoots At Officers & Former Acquaintance, Barricades Inside Home / Columbia

COLUMBIA, TN | 02.06.2023 | Early Monday morning, at approximately 7:30 AM, Columbia Police responded to reports of a domestic incident at a residence on the 100 block of McKinley Drive, cross of Rainer Drive, in South Columbia.

After arriving on scene, officers tried escorting the women to the residence to gather her belongings from the former acquaintance who had prior charges against him for assaulting her. This is where roughly 6 minutes later, the 47-year-old man, Antonio Hardy, allegedly opened fire on officers, prompting officers to exchange gunfire. According to police, the man went back into his home afterwards, barricading himself inside. No injuries were reported in the exchange of gunfire.

Officers on scene requested immediate help. Columbia Police officers and deputies with the Maury County Sheriffs responded and established a perimeter.

Hours later, at approximately 1:00 PM, deputies and officers lost contact with the man after continued negotiating efforts. Shortly after, tactical officers began using flashbangs and eventually gas canisters to try to get the man out of the home. There were continued efforts to make contact via loudspeaker; however, the man inside refused to comply or respond.

At around 3:20 PM, tactical officers breached the home where they found Hardy dead in a bedroom. Jeremy Haywood, Assistant Chief of Police for the Columbia Police Department, said there were no obvious signs of trauma on Hardy; however, there was evidence to suggest he took his own life.

Just after 6:00 PM, Maury County Sheriffs reported that the incident had ended and the man was not killed by any law enforcement officers.

The conflict also caused neighbors to evacuate the area and to stay inside.
