Protest Unites Local Residents With Peace, Not Violence / East Highland | 06.03.2020
HIGHLAND, CA | 06.03.2020 | Wednesday afternoon, local businesses wrap up their customers as they prepare for a protest, not knowing how it will turn out.
Minutes later, at 3:00pm, local residents start to show up for the protest, teachers, friends, young adults and teens, from elderly to teenager. All members of the community united as one for a special day in Highland.
As more people poured into the parking lot by In N Out Burgers, people became eager to walk and memorialize George Floyd, who was one of the many unarmed African american citizens to die in the hands of law enforcement. With homemade signs that say, "Black Lives Matter", "No Justice, No Peace", "How Many More Tears?", "Justice For Breonna", "My Life Should Not Up For Debate" and hundreds of more.
Shortly after 3:10pm, an older gentlemen who is a local resident of 20+ years spoke to the protesters from his heart and gave the crowd uplifting messages. The gentlemen wanted the community to be heard and to be proud of what they are standing for, but to not cause harm. A younger woman spoke to the crowd of protesters as well and allowed several protesters to talk on the microphone. One protester got on the microphone and shared a saying, she furthermore shared her personal experience that touched the community as she spoke.
After 3:30pm, as protesters of the united community walk through the parking lot of In N Out Burgers and out to the streets and sidewalks, they hold their signs up loud and proud, standing for what they believe in. They continue to scream and shout in bravery, but sadness, saying the names they seek justice for while chanting "No Justice, No Peace" and "Black Lives Matter". Vehicles pass by, honking their horns, screaming out of their windows and raising their fists in support of the movement and protest. The protesters continue their walk, as they receive many honks and positive feedback, down Greenspot Road, passing Boulder Avenue and to Stater Brothers. Many protesters continued their support and stood on the corners holding their signs up letting their community know they want change and they want justice.
The protest came to a peaceful end around 4:30pm. No police interruption or standoff was needed and no rioting or looting occurred.
